The changes that ignite from within are communally felt, yet it’s rare that we are able to see or acknowledge it. In this body of work I use shapes as metaphor to illustrate the versions of ourselves that we have always been, in this life and beyond. What shapes do we hold ourselves in? What shapes are we morphing out of, and which ones are we opening ourselves to becoming?
How we each experience Self Change depends on how we experience the World, often involving a myriad of emotions that are in contrast. These conflicting emotions create a tension within us as we lean in to the newness that is unfolding.
In each of my paintings there are four components: shape, colour, gradient and layout. The shape represents the person, and the forms we have been or are becoming. The colour represents the nature of the change that is occurring. The gradient represents the depth or magnitude of the experience. These elements come together and interact to create the layout: a still image of the growth process. Combinations of these elements illustrate the tension and discomfort of growth, and what it takes to become a different version of ourselves. Since it’s often invisible, minimalism represents this process of Self Change, bringing awareness to this thing that’s entwined with the human experience.
