Heart Space
In creating this work, I tapped into my heart space to share it with others. I want to draw attention to this matter, because many people are perhaps unaware that they do not love themselves the way they love others. I want to help people discover that it is possible to work through this unloving state. We are taught that love is something we give or receive from others, and rarely are we reminded to love ourselves. This leads me to question if we are creating this connection with ourselves and really producing a healthy and loving relationship with our own being. While on my own personal journey, I felt called to create this series in order to bring awareness to this idea.
Each painting is a different stage in the process I have taken to learn to love myself. Sprawling black shapes become the primary theme of the painting, beginning as the root of what was preventing me from loving myself and progressing toward acceptance. The other shapes, colours and lines represent my emotions or thoughts which I had at the time. The more opaque the colour, the stronger and more rooted the emotion, memory or feeling was within me. Greens and pinks throughout the paintings show my heart chakra awakening within me.
The variety of green and pink tones I use, signify the love I began to feel for myself, and serve as resonator of healing energy for the viewer.
“Heart Space” is a vulnerable body of work. It is raw, personal, and I do not take it lightly. I hope that it can be a reflection of the viewers own inner personal relationship with themselves and how they show love for their own being. This series will show how many may need to embrace the idea of loving themselves the way they love others. My intention for this work is to encourage the viewer to reflect on how they love themselves, and show that it is possible to go from a loveless, to a loving state of being.
